So for the past few months Rdio (pronounced arr-dee-ohh) has been making a splash in the tech scene as the next big thing in music. It’s an on demand online music service created by the founders of Kazaa and Skype. It competes with Rhapsody and the soon to be US released Spotify. They just opened their service for 3 day trial memberships so I thought I’d see what all the hype is about.
The summer of 2001 was the year I graduated high school. CRAZY it was 9 years ago! I didn’t get to wild out with my friends during summer because I IMMEDIATELY had to go to VCU right after graduation. I had to go to this pre college program for the summer because my high school transcripts weren’t anything the brag about. I was nervous because I didn’t know a single person at VCU and I’ve never been to Richmond except for a high school field trip to a play at the Landmark theater. For most of the summer I had to stay at Rhodes Hall dorms and attend classes. Initially the idea of waking up early and taking classes while my friends were enjoying summer wasn’t cool at all. But it was one of the most memorable summers of my life.
2 weeks ago Ronalyn and I flaked out on going to Busch Gardens with all my friends because neither of us like rides and tickets are now $62! So to make up for it last Saturday I held a cookout at my parents house for all the homies. It was a great turnout and it was awesome catching up with everyone from Bad Newz or The News as some would like to say.
I would love to DJ cookouts and just play feel good music instead of clubs and playing top 40 or sticking to whatever is trendy in music. Lately I’ve been obssessed with Jawaiian music(Hawaiian Reggae) and I thought it would be great for a summer cookout along with the usual dancehall hits. It went over really well and everybody enjoyed it.
Since so many have asked me to send them my playlist here it is!
I miss the days of real feel good R&B music. Not many R&B singers these days just outright serenade anymore except for maybe Neyo and Maxwell. They sing about sex or try to be R&B hip hop thugs. Aint nothing wrong with under the sheets music but there’s just not many current R&B songs that you can play at a wedding or slow dance to anymore.
Almost everyday I see person with a BMW, Lexus, or Benz that can barely afford their car. They are supposed to be LUXURY cars symbolizing that you are wealthy. You clearly aren’t wealthy if you fall into any of these categories and you shouldn’t be driving a luxury car if…
If you watch the whole video you’ll notice shots of Lil Jon pre crunk fame. This song was on the So So Def Bass All Stars Vol II album. I bought this CD thinking it had Ghost Town DJ’s My Boo but it has a wack ass remix on it. My Boo was actually on the first volume, but the rest of the album was great. It also had the huge pop hit by INOJ Love You Down. I was around 13 at the time and this was definitely the must have album of the summer. It was actually one of the few CD’s I had but I listened to it nonstop during the summer of 1997. Looking back this song was more freestyle than bass but it was still tight. I’ve always loved Bass music more so than the current electro trend that is popular now. That just gave me an idea: I will make a Bass mix. Stay Tuned!!
No music is represents summer than reggae. I haven’t posted a mix here in a long time because I haven’t heard a mixed that I really liked lately. I’m kinda tired of the trendy electro/house stuff out right now and I’m tired of hearing the same “old school” mixes. I DLed this mix to fillup my ipod on a roadtrip 3 weeks ago and kept on playing it over and over. Ronalyn was kind of annoyed by it but I love finding new music that I never heard. It’s a Hawaiian Reggae mix with a chill roots reggae feel as opposed to dancehall reggae. It’s great chillout music for summer nights and cookouts after playing all day on the beach. There’s no tracklist but I am sure you will enjoy it.
It was my birthday last Wednesday June 9 and my lovely girlfriend Ronalyn got me this charging station and USB Watch(the one in the middle). I’ve been eying this watch for a few months now. It’s exactly the same as the limited Serato watch that was released with the new Sl3. It only came with the new Sl3 unit and you can’t buy it separately. I’ve been watching a few on Ebay and they sell for over $100 which is too much for me. So I found this one online for only $40 but it was sold out everywhere. It’s exactly the same except that it doesn’t have the Rane and Serato logos. 2 weeks I saw they were in stock and got REALLY excited. I told Ronalyn that is what I REALLY REALLY want for my birthday. I kinda forced her to buy it that day because I said if she wasn’t going to buy it I was going to go ahead and buy it. I’ve been in need of a new USB flash drive because this dude at work used my computer and kicked my flash drive on accident and bent it all up. It’s also 8gb which is way more than 1gb I had.
I see alot of people online asking about the Vestax VCI 300 Serato Itch midi controller so I thought I’d put my 2 cents in on it. Earlier this year I impulsively bought one because I found a steal for one on Ebay for $500. I sold my speaker system that I haven’t used in over a year to justify my purchase but I’m kind of regretting selling it because I have had some people ask me to do mobile gigs.
This song came out when I was in 8th grade. At the time I only had the song on cassette dubbed from the radio and I could never get the WHOLE song recorded. I wanted their album bad so I traded my classmate a bunch of printed out lyrics for a dub of Camp Lo’s album. Back then I was one of the only kids in school with a computer and internet. This was pre MP3′s about 1996. I used to bring in print outs of yo mama jokes, lyrics, and naked pictures of pam anderson and other celebs. I was caught with the yo mama jokes and had them taken away but luckily I didn’t get caught with the naked pictures of chicks. But I listened to Camp Lo’s album and loved their flow and wordplay. I still dont know what the hell they were saying but the way they were rapping just sounded so fly and smooth. Their delivery was definitely unique and didn’t have the usual punchines, metaphors, or bragging about money. Other joints I liked off the album were Black Nostaljack, Sparkle, and Say Word. I have no idea why they never released another album to follow up Uptown Saturday Night. They released one in the mid 2000′s but by then most people have forgot about them.
