Monday Mix: DJ Roc Raida – Next Stop Brooklyn

Every Monday I will upload one of my favorite mixes. DJ Mixes are my FM radio and Pandora. When I’m not hand picking songs I listen to mixes. Plus when I listen to individual songs I get into DJ mode and think of songs that will mix well with the current song playing. I dont get much done at work when I’m scrolling and searching for songs. So a good mix will keep my hands off my ipod and keep me productive at work.

Just like my last post with AM I’ve been meaning to post a tribute to Grandmaster Roc Raida. In the mid to late 90′s while the turntablism scene was exploding in the West Coast, Roc Raida and the X-men held it down for DJ’s on the East Coast. Even if San Francisco was the mecca for scratching and turntablism at the time, Roc Raida and the Xmen made sure that the East Coast and NY was represented in the art of turntablism. He was the East Coast equivalent of Qbert. Roc Raida and Xmen revolutionized turntablism with complex beat juggling patterns and body tricks. When I first started DJing the very first thing I learned was how to do was body tricks inspired by Roc Raida. Before I even learned how to mix I knew how to do juggle a sample and tap the fader behind my back, tap the fader under my leg, and tap the fader while spinning around. Body tricks aren’t the most technically difficult tricks but they’re visually entertaining.

This mix by Roc Raida is one of my favorite all time mixes. I used constantly study and dissect this mix as I was learning how to DJ. This just embodies mixtapes of the 90′s complete with scratches, trick mixes, real hip hop, and telephone drops. Mixtapes are rarely made like this anymore. If you’re a DJ you need to listen to this!
