Musiq Soulchild – Just Friends

The summer of 2001 was the year I graduated high school. CRAZY it was 9 years ago! I didn’t get to wild out with my friends during summer because I IMMEDIATELY had to go to VCU right after graduation. I had to go to this pre college program for the summer because my high school transcripts weren’t anything the brag about.  I was nervous because I didn’t know a single person at VCU and I’ve never been to Richmond except for a high school field trip to a play at the Landmark theater. For most of the summer I had to stay at Rhodes Hall dorms and attend classes. Initially the idea of waking up early and taking classes while my friends were enjoying summer wasn’t cool at all. But it was one of the most memorable summers of my life.

During the summer of 2001 West Coast hip hop made a comeback, crip walking and harlem shaking were the hottest dance trends, and neo soul ruled R&B. I loved the whole Neo Soul movement of the early 2000′s led by D’Angelo and Maxwell and newcomers Musiq Soulchild and Jill Scott. Just Friends by Musiq was released in winter 2000 but it was an essential summer jam. It didn’t matter if you were a hip hop head or thug EVERYBODY liked this song. It’s not a sappy slow jam that you’d be embarrassed to be caught listening to at a stop light. It’s like a cool backyard BBQ slightly uptempo sing a long jam.  If I were a 1 Hit Wonder I wish I would’ve sang this song. It’s a timeless song that would still be a hit if it came out today.

Long story short I made many friends and got my first taste of the ghettoness of Richmond (pre-Shortpump and pre Shafer). It was a really fun experience because everything was new and out of my comfort zone. Coming into the Fall semester I already knew my  way around Richmond and had a group of friends to kick it with. It was just the start of the most memorable years of my life.
